| Resumo | Several short-term distance education courses in Remote Sensing Technology, highlighting environmental applications, have been offered by INPE since 2004. These courses have been presented in a traditional "one-size-fits-all" Hypermedia approach. Hypermedia is a system in which various types of media are connected by a hypertext program. The experience demonstrates that there is a great difference among students backgrounds, learning styles, interests and preferences. Therefore, this approach has not been able to fulfill heterogeneous needs of many users. Adaptive Hypermedia is an area of research on the crossroads of Hypermedia and User Modeling. Adaptive Hypermedia Systems build a model of the goals, preferences and knowledge of each individual user, and use this model throughout the interaction with the user, in order to adapt to the needs of that user. This paper proposes rules of adaptation based on the theory of automata to build a User Model. The objective is to use this User Model to adjust the course according to the aims, tasks, interests and other abilities of individual students or group of students. The essential purpose is to keep the students motivated in order to improve learning efficiency. | |||
